If you are considering working in the web development field, you need to first decide what type of developer you to be. A front-end developer would focus on the client-side, whole back-end developers are more on the server-side.

Back-end developers work within the web development team and are responsible for the management of the data storage and ensure that content is being delivered to the front-end.

A back-end developer is responsible for the way how a web application works, what is the logic behind the processes so that it functions properly. They are also the ones that optimize the speed and efficiency of the app. As a back-end developer, you will work closely with the tech team, including both front- and back-end developers, as well as other engineers and UX architects.

If this is what interests you, here are the most important skills a back-end developer needs.

What are the necessary skills for a back-end developer

As a back-end developer, you should:

  • Be proficient in back-end programming languages and the specific framework that the company uses
  • Understand deeply front-end technologies such as CSS, HTML, and javaScript to be able to communicate with the other members of the tech team
  • Be able to work with data administration and manage a hosting environment
  • Be familiar with security compliance
  • Have experience with version control

To learn these specific back-end skills, most developers undergo different types of formal training, including a degree in computer science. There are various online courses, as well as in-person options you can sign up for to obtain the necessary skills for back-end development.

For online learning, some of the best options include courses on Udemy, Udacity, and Bloc.io. As most of the online courses teach full-stack, which includes both back- and front-end material, it might be difficult to find a true back-end development online course, but there are several options available on these platforms with an emphasis on the back-end.

If you prefer in-person training, you can search for a back-end development course or a boot camp like the ones provided by the General Assembly and Betamore. Keep in mind that these courses are not cheap but in general, they are way more affordable compared to a formal computer science degree. And unlike online courses, you will have the benefit to interact with the other participants and communicate with your mentors which can be a valuable experience.

Other useful skills for a back-end developer

Apart from the very basics, stated above, there are other useful skills that a back-end developer should have in order to be successful. Some of these include good knowledge of CRM and CMS platforms, full proficiency in working with database technologies, excellent use of source code management tools, and knowledge of mobile web development and cloud app development.

As a back-end developer, you will work closely with the other members of the tech team, so you should have excellent communication skills and be able to convey your ideas and methods well both in a verbal and written form. You should be well-organized, have great attention to detail, and be able to plan, prioritize, and manage your time effectively. Ability to multi-task and strong interpersonal skills are a plus.
